Apparently in Gen 9, Sketch can be called by Metronome. This probably doesn't mean a Pokemon with Metronome can learn most moves, otherwise competitive would be in chaos right now, so what actually happens? Does Sketch fail? Does it teach the move but get overriden by the Metronome moveslot at the end of the turn? I'm curious to know the mechanics here.

Where did you see that Sketch can be called by Metronome? If you were looking at the chart on Bulbapedia, a lot of the boxes under Gen 9 that are unchecked belong to signature moves, and even those that aren't don't seem to be callable be Metronome. I've been testing for hours, and while it is probable that I could've just missed it or misremembered, it'd be a pretty big coincidence that I didn't get any of the unchecked moves from Metronome.

In short, I don't think Sketch can be called from Metronome.
Generation IX

“Sketch cannot be selected in a battle, as no available Pokémon can learn it. However, it can be called by Metronome.”

I saw a couple other moves with that description (other moves have different descriptions). Even still, I've seen like none of the other moves that are unchecked in the list of moves that can't be called by Metronome. I'll keep testing, but like I said, it'd be a pretty big coincidence that I'm just getting unlucky with selecting those moves.

According to the move dump sheet found in this thread, both Sketch's CanUseMove and Metronome flag are both false, so it can't be selected and it was never able to be called via Metronome anyway.
